Gil Owens is a self-taught acrylic and encaustic painter. He has been influenced by a wide variety of sources including the French impressionist and modern day New Orleans artists.
Raised in North Carolina, Gil's art career began with knee surgery. His mother, a painter and photographer, had come to enforce the doctors convalescing orders after surgery. She brought oil paints and canvas with her to pass the time. It was during this time that he learned to paint and realized that communication takes on many forms. "A painting is an enduring communication between the artist and the outside world. Every piece of work that an artist produces is a statement to the rest of the world about something." Based on a strong belief that too many people lack balance in their everyday lives. Gil's paintings encourage people to slow down and notice our spectacular surroundings.
The Big C
As it does with so many people's loves, cancer came to call in 2012. Touching off a multi-year battle that involved numerous surgeries and months of treatments and hospital stays. I am happy to say that I am cancer free these days. Unfortunately this is a battle people have to fight every day.
It is for these people that we donate 20% of the profit for all sales to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Heartfelt is a series of heart paintings on square canvas. They represent the many variations of the heart; the ever changing nature and complexity that is our heart.
Heartfelt started during Gil's cancer treatments and has become his most collected works. Heartfelt continues to touch Gil's collectors and joins each heart with him in his personal effort supporting cancer research.
