About Robin Daning
I live and work in New Orleans. I studied art at Syracuse University and also earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of New Hampshire. This dual focus on art and psychology very much defines my work.
I paint detailed images with pigmented ink on the smooth surfaces of standard white dominoes (2" × 1" × ¼"), treating each domino as a blank canvas. I attach the finished dominoes to painted boards or canvas, usually in two to six layers, sometimes with significant overlapping so that some dominoes are almost completely hidden. In some pieces, the dotted sides of the dominoes are displayed. In others, I add painted polymer clay. My pieces are framed (unless created on cradled board) and are ready to hang.
My art has two main themes. The first is faces with exaggerated features, sometimes further enhanced with painted polymer clay. My fascination with facial expressions is no doubt explained by my background in psychology. The second theme is Louisiana and New Orleans imagery, including shotgun houses, musical instruments and musicians, streetcars, famous landmarks, indigenous wildlife, and the region's signature food and drink.
For more than 15 years, I have worked with and been represented by the Bee Galleries, including Bee by the Bay Gallery. During that time, we have collaborated on special events and commissioned projects, building lasting relationships with collectors throughout New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, and beyond. I value this long-standing partnership and the opportunity it has provided to share my work with audiences who appreciate innovative, handcrafted art.
